WhatsApp is making big changes to archived chats

Image Description

Like many other message app, WhatsApps includes the option to archive chats that you now longer need to be front and center. There have long been changes planned for the feature and there have already been a couple of name changes and feature tests.

Late last year we saw references to a new Vacation Mode option for the Archived Chats function. which implied a means of blocking notifications for chats for a short period. This option was later renamed to Read Later, but now there are signs of further changes and development.

The latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS shows that this feature is back to its original name of Archived Chats. In addition to the change in name, WABetaInfo has also spotted further changes to the way the feature works.

One of the changes is the arrival of a counter. This is a simple tool that serves as a visual indicator of how many of the chats you have archived have received new responses.

Dip into the archives

In another change, when archived chats do receive further responses, they will no longer be automatically unarchived as was the case in previous implementations of the feature.

It's good to see that users are being given greater control over the way archived chats work. While for some people it makes perfect sense to use the receipt of a new reply to a chat to automatically unarchive it, for other people archiving is likely to be something that should be regarded as a permanent choice.

At the moment, the name change and new functionality are showing up in the iOS version of WhatsApp. It would, however, be surprising if they did not also make their way to the Android app, or even the desktop edition of WhatsApp.

  • Google Calendar is turning into an appointment booking system

Booking appointments in Google Calendar just got even easier as Google is now rolling out a new appointment scheduling feature to its calendar app.

First introduced for paid Google Workspace users last June, the company's appointment scheduling feature allows users to share their availability through a booking page.

This booking page can be used by external stakeholders, clients, partners and others to schedule time to meet in-person or over video through Google Meet.

Creating a bookable appointment schedule in Google Calendar is just as easy as setting up a new event or task and on desktop, it can be done by clicking the plus icon. However, you will need a paid Google Workspace Individual account to test out this feature for yourself.

    Appointment scheduling vs appointment slot

While Google Calendar's appointment scheduling may sound similar to its existing appointment slot feature, they have entirely different use cases.

The appointment slot feature in Google Calendar is intended for internal use cases where you don't know who needs to meet with you but want to make yourself available. For instance, professors can use it to hold their office hours while an IT department can make itself available for employees experiencing computer issues.

Appointment scheduling on the other hand is suited for external use cases and allows for people outside of your organization, including those who don't have a Google account, to schedule meetings. However, you won't have to worry about double bookings or rescheduling appointments as the feature also supports automatic conflict detection with existing Google Calendar events.

Now that businesses have begun implementing hybrid work policies, this additional flexibility makes it easier to schedule meetings and share your availability in a way that works for everyone.

  • Linkedin signs million-pound deal with UK government for specialist job recruitment

The UK Cabinet Office has signed a two-year deal with LinkedIn as it looks for new candidates for various “specialist” roles, including numerous digital professionals and senior roles.

As reported by Public Technology, only the details of the first year are known, as the deal will be re-evaluated after the first 12 months. Starting in December 3, 2021, LinkedIn will provide the Cabinet Office with a total of 17 LinkedIn Talent Solutions licenses, and 144 posts to be advertised by the government agencies, via Job Slots.

Each license is worth around £7,275, bringing the total cost for the first year up to just above £205,000. In total, the deal will be worth around £1m, with the remainder of the funds being spent in year two.

    Licenses split between departments

There will be multiple beneficiaries of the contract, the report claims, including the Government Digital Service (six licenses, 40 job postings), the Government Recruitment Service (five licenses, 70 job postings), the Government Commercial Function (four licenses, 20 job listings), and the Cabinet Office’s People and Places Team and its Director General Workforce unit (each will get one license and three postings).

The Cabinet Office will not get any software licenses, but will have eight job slots, which will be spent for positions at the Crown Commercial Service.

LinkedIn is the go-to social media and recruitment platform for professionals worldwide. It currently has more than 800 million active users, in more than 200 countries and territories around the world. Among its various services is the LinkedIn Talent Solution, a job site that allows users advanced headhunting features, such as advanced search filters and spotlights, smart suggestions for skills and locations, or prioritizing candidates “ready or open to make a move”.

In the contract, it was said that the Cabinet Office sought “access to a large diverse UK-based candidate pool of 10 million-plus” people, and the “ability to target both the active and passive candidate market when posting jobs and conducting candidate search activities”.
