The cheapest 8-core AMD Ryzen laptop is far cheaper than an equivalent octa-core PC

(editorial note: We are aware of the existence of cheaper Core i7 laptops as sold on popular online Chinese retailer websites. The Auktion Tbook7 costs $460 but is light-years behind the IdeaPad 5 as it uses a 4th generation i7 and that's a similar trend across cheaper Core i7 laptops)

Lenovo no longer lists the AMD Ryzen-powered IdeaPad 5 on its own site, and we don't know why. Fortunately, the laptop is still available at Walmart - and at a seriously affordable price too.

On paper, the IdeaPad 5 (model numbers 81YM0060US, 81YM005YUS or 81YM0061US) has a lot going for it. With a rock-bottom price, the machine significantly undercuts the previous cheapest AMD Ryzen 8-core laptop.

What do you get for your money? A choice of three colours, a 14-inch full HD IPS display, an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U CPU, 8GB of DDR4 memory (soldered), a 256GB PCIe SSD and a 57WHr battery that should last up to 14 hours.

The processor has eight threads and seven GPU cores with a base clock speed of 2GHz, 12MB cache and a default TDP of only 15W. The graphics subsystem is not too shabby either, thanks to the integrated Vega GPU - great for anyone looking for a business laptop or mobile workstation.

A fingerprint reader is integrated with the power button and there's a privacy shutter to block the webcam when it's not in use. Small features like this could be a boon for small businesses and professionals looking for a powerful laptop that takes security seriously.

It is a shame, however, that it doesn’t include Windows 10 Pro, but you can always upgrade from Windows 10 Home (albeit at a cost).

Connectivity and expansion capabilities include an SD card reader, audio connector, HDMI port, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, two USB ports and a USB Type-C that provides power as well.

    Cybersecurity researchers have helped patch several vulnerabilities in an extremely popular WordPress plugin, which could have been exploited by any visitor to undertake a number of actions against affected WordPress websites, such as exporting sensitive information.

    OptinMonster helps create sales campaigns on WordPress websites without much effort.  through the use of dialogs. Wordfence explains that the vast majority of the plugin’s functionality as well as the OptinMonster app site rely on the use of API endpoints.

    “Unfortunately, the majority of the REST-API endpoints were insecurely implemented, making it possible for unauthenticated attackers to access many of the various endpoints on sites running a vulnerable version of the plugin,” wrote Wordfence’s threat analyst Chloe Chamberland. 

    In her run down of the vulnerabilities, Chamberland notes that one of the vulnerable endpoints could have been exploited to leak sensitive data like the site’s full path on the server, along with the API key the website uses to make requests on the OptinMonster site.

    “With access to the API key, an attacker could make changes to any campaign associated with a site’s connected OptinMonster account and add malicious JavaScript that would execute anytime a campaign was displayed on the exploited site,” says Chamberland.

    She notes that rather worryingly the vulnerability could have been exploited by any visitor to the website. 

    Although there aren’t reports of the vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild, the plugin developer has invalidated all API keys, forcing users to generate new ones. They’ve also patched all vulnerabilities and made changes to how changes are made to the campaigns.
