Some of the best Prime Day tablet deals cut the price of Samsung's Galaxy Tab range

Image Description

There are three main groups of tablet Prime Day deals - there's the expected smattering of Amazon Fire tablet discounts, a very select number of iPad deals, and then some bigger Samsung Galaxy Tab reductions.

In case you missed the headline, the Prime Day tablet deals we're looking at here are on the latter, Samsung's Android tablets that rival iPads in a few ways. The company has slates that hit the cheap, mid-range and top-end of the tablet market.

There are six discounted models in all, with some seeing better discounts than others, and several of them having discounts on different configurations. Some of the brand's cheapest tablets have seen reductions though, so if you don't want to spend much at all, you really don't need to.

Remember that a cheap tablet can be just as good as a pricier one if you don't need it for anything intensive.

We've got deals in the US, and we've got deals in the UK - based elsewhere? Scroll down for prices in your region.

Samsung has three main lines of tablets.

The first one, that you're probably most interested, is the Galaxy Tab A line. These are affordable slates with weak processors and usually no stylus support, but they're fine as portable entertainment devices to distract your kids (or yourself) on journeys and long waits.

The company's main series of slates is the Galaxy Tab S line, and this covers premium models (the numbered ones) and mid-range ones (the e or Lite devices). These have more features, longer-lasting battery lives and stronger processors, but cost more as a result.

Finally, there's the company's Active line, though there are only Prime Day deals on these in the US. These are rugged slates for people who need an outdoor work unit, and are generally not consumer devices.

  • MacBook Air 2022 launch still on track, but there's bad news about the MacBook Pro

Apple has pushed back the next-gen MacBook Air to later in 2022, and no more high-end MacBook Pro launches are expected until next year – but there will be a Pro 13-inch overhaul, or at least that’s the latest word from the rumor mill.

All this comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a well-known Apple leaker, who broke this latest speculation via his newsletter (as flagged up by MacRumors).

Gurman asserts that it was Apple’s original intention to launch the fully redesigned MacBook Air powered by a next-gen M2 chip at the end of last year, or early in 2022, but obviously that didn’t happen (the refreshed Air was certainly a strong tip for Apple’s most recent launch event – but didn’t show up).

Apple hasn’t been able to stick to this original timeframe, apparently, and so is now planning on launching the MacBook Air in the second half of 2022.

As for other MacBooks, we won’t see any new MacBook Pro 14-inch or 16-inch models this year, so Apple will not be debuting anything in that category until 2023, Gurman observes. When those refreshed higher-end MacBook Pro versions do turn up, they will likely sport M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs.

However, the Apple leaker believes that we could see a revamped MacBook Pro 13-inch – the base model – turn up at some stage this year, and that could sport the M2 chip which is also destined for the next MacBook Air as mentioned.

Analysis: Evidence for the Air is gathering weight

Of course, with the MacBook Air being so strongly rumored in recent times, it’s a good bet that it’s still in the cards to appear from Apple, and the most likely launch slot would be at a big Apple event in the fall. This ties in with another heavyweight Apple leaker, Ming-Chi Kuo, predicting that the redesigned MacBook Air could hit mass production in Q3 (or maybe late Q2), and so would be launched not too far down the line after that.

Elsewhere on the grapevine, inside sources who spoke to 9to5Mac have theorized that we will see a new MacBook Air and fresh MacBook Pro 13-inch later in 2022, both with M2 chips – echoing the forecast just provided by Gurman.

So, this latest prediction backs up what has been floating around via the rumor mill already, and seemingly underlines the likelihood of seeing at least the new MacBook Air at some point later this year. And of course maybe a Pro 13-inch refresh, as mentioned, on top, which could run with a pretty basic overhaul (just pepping up the processor to an M2 model, and that’s about all).

  • It's time Windows 11 got rid of this trashy feature

Microsoft has poured a lot of energy into making Windows 11 one of its cleanest-looking operating systems to date, but one Reddit user has pointed out that it could have gone further – and we completely agree.

U/hyperactiverobot created a concept video in which the Recycle Bin can be moved to the taskbar, allowing Windows 11 users to drag unwanted files down onto it if they still want to preserve its functionality. It also allows quick access to mass-deleted unwanted data for good without hogging any of your precious desktop space.

    its_time_to_move_the_recycle_bin_to_the_taskbar from r/Windows11

Right now, your options are to either leave it fixed onto your desktop as highlighting the application and pressing delete won't remove it alone. Or you can choose to unpin the recycling bin from the desktop by right-clicking the Windows 11 desktop, selecting “Personalization,” and then heading into “Themes”.

After that, select “Desktop Icon Settings” and a window will appear that allows you to uncheck “Recycle Bin” from the list of applications that are fixed to your desktop.

The icon for the Recycle Bin has been a fixed part of the desktop ever since Windows 95 was released 26 years ago (known as 'Trash' back then), but the way that people like to use their computers and laptops is changing. For some, a desktop space with no visible icons is preferred, especially if you like to use features like live wallpapers on Wallpaper Engine, or set your favorite photographs as your background.

Opinion: is this a feature anyone still uses?

When I saw the concept I had two immediate thoughts wash over me: firstly that this was preferable to the Recycle Bin being on the desktop space or absent entirely (which I'll touch on in a moment), but this was closely followed by "does anyone still drag/drop files into it?".

I'm assuming that some folks do, out of habit if nothing else, but it's much quicker to simply click or highlight your unwanted files en masse and... press the 'Delete' key on your keyboard. It all goes to the same place after all.

The nuisance isn't how you get your files into the bin though; it's remembering to clear it out. If you're like me, you can be forgetful and emptying the files from the Recycle Bin isn't set to a schedule on the off chance that I need to restore a file in an emergency (unless you're a very well-planned person. If so, hats off to you). In fact, I only just cleared my bin for the first time in months because I saw this concept feature.

Removing it from your eyeline entirely if you're as susceptible as I am to forgetting to empty it manually shouldn't cause issues, but it's nice to have it easily accessible in case you need to rummage through and find files you've accidentally deleted.

If you do want to set your Recycle Bin to self-empty on a schedule then you can head into "System", scroll down and click “Storage.” From there, click into the “Storage Management” section, click “Storage Sense” where you'll find an option called “Automatic User Content Cleanup.”

Enable this and then you'll have an option to run not just Storage Sense on a schedule (a feature that automatically cleans up unused files and downloaded data to free up disk space), but also set a timeframe for how often the Recycle Bin should self-empty.
