Microsoft Edge is getting a vital password security tool

Image Description

With most of us now reliant on an ever-growing number of password-protected online accounts and services, the number of login credentials we need to remember is staggering.

Thankfully, modern web browsers can help out, storing and filling in passwords for us - and Microsoft is expanding the capabilities of Edge's Password Manager tool to do just that.

The password manager feature itself is far from new, and it has been able to let you know if any of your stored passwords have been involved in data breaches for quite a while. But Microsoft has now added a new password heath feature to provide at-a-glance information about credentials.

Password Health can be found as an optional toggle on the main Password setting page in Edge – edge://settings/passwords. With the toggle enabled, a new Health Column appears on the page, complete with an icon to indicate the health status of each of the passwords you have asked the browser to save for you.

An icon featuring a single line indicates a Weak and reused password, while one with two lines indicates a Weak password (or) resused password. An icon with three lines means that there is No known vulnerability for the password, while a red circle is indicative of a Leaked password. a fifth icon is used to indicate those passwords you have told Edge to ignore.

Health checkup

As the health information is displayed in a sortable column, it is possible to quickly and easily group all of your weak, resused or compromised passwords together. This makes the process of changing them to boost security a much simpler one.

At the moment, the Password Health functionality is only available in Microsoft Edge Canary 93 which is available to download here. If you're not keen on using a potentially unstable version of the browser, it should only be a matter of weeks before the feature progress to the Beta builds, and ultimately the main release version of Edge.

  • Zomato's new delivery: Impressive restaurants for interested investors

Indian restaurant aggregator Zomato has launched Zomato Wings, which is a platform to help restaurants raise money for growth. Zomato Wings hopes to be the one-stop place for various types of funders looking to make private investments in restaurants and cloud-kitchens. Zomato will help restaurants position their "story and metrics" in the right manner and connect them with the right investors.

"Just like ambitious restaurant entrepreneurs look for investors, investors also hunt for brands and teams that have the potential to become the next big chain. We at Zomato have seen the growth story of such restaurants first hand. By curating a set of restaurants and cloud-kitchens that could become rocketships if fuelled with equity capital, we hope to build the go-to platform for venture capital firms, angel investors, family offices, etc. that are looking to make private investments in restaurants and cloud-kitchens," Zomato said in its announcement

Zomato Wings to help at least 100 restaurant brands

Zomato said that it was not easy for restaurants in India to raise funding through growth-focused equity investors.

Some large chains have attracted investors, but that is obviously not enough. In the last three years, only about 25 restaurants and cloud-kitchens saw Series A or larger equity funding rounds.

"There are thousands of budding restaurants that may not have the expertise or focus to fundraise at the right time from the right investors. This is where we want to help," Zomato said.

Zomato hoped that its exposure to enterprising restaurants would come handy for it to provide leads to potential investors.

Zomato  has a target of giving wings to at least 100 restaurant brands in the next three years through this new initiative.

Will Zomato too invest in restaurants?

Zomato, which itself tapped the bourses with a $1.26 billion initial public offering earlier this year, has announced it has invested nearly $275 million across four companies over the past six months. These include fitness startup Curefit, logistics firm Shiprocket, grocery delivery player Grofers, and savings app Magicpin.

So that begs the question will Zomato will also invest in some interesting restaurant ventures. According to Zomato, it wouldn't

"We are mindful that by owning an equity stake in one brand, we may raise some concern among other brands. Again, we do not want to compete with restaurants, and want to remain a fair and neutral platform for all restaurants," it explained.

Zomato’s role  would be limited to being a facilitator of fundraising for restaurants.

  • Microsoft adds useful new features to its Endpoint protection tool for Linux

Microsoft has announced it is adding a selection of useful security features to its Defender for Endpoint on Linux offering.

In addition to antivirus (AV) and endpoint detection and response (EDR) abilities, which have been generally available since January 2021, Defender for Endpoint on Linux gained threat and vulnerability management (TVM) capabilities, earlier this year in June, 2021.

“With recent Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux integration into Azure Security Center, the benefits of our Linux EDR and TVM now extend to Azure Defender customers,” noted Microsoft.

Azure Defender provides threat protection for workloads running in Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, Azure, and in other clouds.

    Extra Linux protection

For starters, the Linux EDR detection has been enhanced with the live response capabilities and is now available for public preview customers.

According to Microsoft, the live response capability enables admins to investigate issues and take corrective actions, in real-time. The feature also helps enhance investigations into incidents by helping collect forensic data, share suspicious entities for further analysis, and proactively hunt for possible threats.

Furthermore, based on the feedback from its customers, Microsoft has fleshed its list of supported Linux server distros with the addition of Amazon Linux 2 and Fedora 33+, and several downstream Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) variants.

It's also making Defender antivirus behavior monitoring generally available on Linux, and plans to use these behavior-based signals as additional runtime signals for their cloud-powered machine learning (ML) models.

"With behavior monitoring, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Linux protection is expanded to generically intercept whole new classes of threats such as ransom[ware], sensitive data collection, crypto mining, and others. Behavior monitoring alerts appear in the Microsoft 365 Defender alongside all other alerts and can be effectively investigated," Microsoft notes while soliciting feedback from the users.
