Here's how Grid Studio are bringing framed Apple, Nintendo and Sony nostalgia to your walls

Image Description

A company by the name of Grid Studio has been lovingly taking apart certain devices and placing them into picture frames for customers to hang up in their homes this past year.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and that includes the devices we used to use every day, before they were replaced by a more powerful model.

We may remember how we used them in important events in our lives, or how they were our first - whether that was our first smartphone, gaming handheld or watch. For many of us, it’s good to remember the devices that made the most difference to us.

This is where Grid Studio comes in. Established in September 2020, and based in Shenzhen, China, a team of six disassemble long-abandoned products and frame them in attractive layouts for anyone to buy. We’ve had a few sent to us which showcase just how well these deconstructed devices look in a frame.

Back to the Past

Having bought an iPhone 4 frame a few months ago, displaying a PlayStation Portable, Apple Watch Series 1, and iPhone 3GS side by side really makes you realise just how small or large the components were that made up these portable products, that were small enough to be stored in our pockets or bags back when we were at school or in our first jobs.

The PSP hit me immediately, sprawled across a square frame that lays bare the components that made up Sony’s first handheld gaming console, launched back in 2004. It brings me back to a time where me and a few friends would play GTA: Liberty City Stories in the common room during college.

They come incredibly well-packaged, with a neat bow and stamp laid across the packaging. Once you take the frame out, the nostalgia hits you like cold water - the components sprawled across the frame, with the logo and descriptions of each part elegantly described. You can tell that every frame is passionately made with an aim to show the deconstructed device in all its glory.

After hanging them up in the office, there’s a temptation for more, but also for what Grid Studio could do next. From consoles to Apple Macs, there’s huge potential here to tap into nostalgia from every generation of computers and gaming devices.

They retail from $169.99 in the US and £139.99 (around AU$229) plus shipping, but the delivery usually takes a week to arrive. These are a perfect gift for either yourself or someone who has a lot of fond memories using certain devices.

Sourcing Grid Studio

While the company has only been open for 18 months, it’s already been making an impact for offices around the world. We asked how the company began and what future products could be on the horizon.

“One of our founders had a lightbulb moment after disassembling his own equipment, hand-painted some drawings and pasted the parts on paper, and made a great piece of artwork. In the beginning, this was just a hobby, but one of our partners thought it should be shared with more people who also love this kind of art, so Grid Studio essentially started from there,” Joe, one of the three co-founders at Grid Studio told us.

“We work with partners who help us collect equipment, usually from mobile phone repair shops and some agents.”

With the amount of orders growing as word spreads, Joe remarks that creating these frames can be a challenge. “This is completely challenging. As you know, much of the equipment is very old. We need to select and clean it many times to make sure it looks beautiful.

And the size and weight of some equipment is too large, we need to use more glue to paste, which requires multiple tests to ensure that it will not fall.”

The VP of iPad at Apple also requested a frame from Grid Studio too. “We can’t sell a frame with a larger volume and weight for the time being, but we did make a first-generation iPad frame for the vice president of the iPad product marketing department not long ago. But due to the large weight and volume, we spent a lot of time dealing with shipping issues as the costs are very high. We are looking for a better solution to this so we can offer this and other products in the future.”

We wondered why there’s such a market for these frames already, and what else could be coming up from the company.

“In the beginning, this was born out of a hobby, and we didn't expect to be loved by so many technology fans due to the nostalgia of what we’re offering. Many Apple employees also appreciate our products, so we’ve gained a lot of confidence from all of this. Our next plan is to continue to complete the frames of the Google Pixel series, the Game Boy line, and then the Sony PlayStation.”

  • 9 hidden iOS tricks that every iPhone user should know

Apple’s iOS has come a long way from its iPhoneOS starting point, and all of the best iPhones have built on the operating system’s initial promise. Steve Jobs demonstrated the power of the iPhone in 2007 with a huge on-stage Starbucks order, and the platform has grown year after year with each update adding new features.

Multitasking, the notification and Control Center, and even the App Store, were all added to the iPhone after its first iteration, and that rapid pace of innovation can make it hard to keep up with new features.

With that in mind, we’ve put together this list of useful features you may have missed. Some are accessibility options, some need to be enabled, and others are just waiting to be used. All of them, though, will make your iPhone experience better.

    1. Use a cursor to select text

    iOS tips and tricks

Texting is a way of life, but it’s still surprisingly cumbersome even at the best of times. If you’ve ever had an errant word added by autocorrect but not spotted it until you’ve written a few dozen words more, this tip is for you.

Sure, you can hold your finger to the text to jump to it, but this can occasionally lead to highlighting an entire word or sentence. For more granular control, we’d recommend the following:

    • Hold your finger or thumb at the bottom of your screen, underneath the keyboard.
    • This will grey out the keyboard, and turn it into a trackpad until you raise your finger or thumb.

    Hey presto, easy text selection!

    2. Create text snippets

    iOS tips and tricks

Text snippets are popular for macOS power users, but you can achieve the same result with your iPhone. Better yet, it doesn’t require any third-party software.

Text snippets are ideal shortcuts for copying in certain phrases you’ve pre-registered. If you’re dealing with a client via iMessage, for example, you may want to send a standardized response. With text replacement, you can create a block of text to be posted whenever you type a phrase.

    • Open Settings, then head to General, then Keyboard.
    • Pick Text Replacement and you’ll be able to create new replacements, and the words required to trigger them.

In our example, you can see that typing 'omw' brings up 'On my way!', but there are plenty of places where this would be useful. You can also set emoji to appear when you type, which feels pleasantly nostalgic in a way you just don’t get from the emoji picker.

    3. Enable the scientific calculator

    iOS tips and tricks

The iPad may not feature a calculator, but the iPhone does. The trouble is, it can feel a tad limiting outside of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division – at least until you find a new perspective.

Turning your iPhone to the side with the calculator app open will enable the scientific calculator. This adds brackets, square roots, cos/sin/tan options, and the ever-handy π command, among plenty of others.

    4. Enable an additional ‘button’

    iOS tips and tricks

While intended as an accessibility feature, the iPhone’s ‘back tap’ button is handy for power users looking for additional input for their device.

    • Go to Settings, then Accessibility, then Touch.
    • Select Back Tap and you’ll be presented with plenty of options.

You can use this in a number of ways, such as triggering the App Switcher, snapping a quick screenshot, or opening Spotlight search from anywhere on your device. There are also double and triple tap options, meaning you can set multiple functions for it.

    5. Use your camera’s 'Burst Mode'

    iOS tips and tricks

Your iPhone’s camera is plenty powerful enough, but there’s one trick you may have missed: Burst Mode. Burst mode, as the name suggests, takes a series of rapid-fire images in one press which means your iPhone can capture a series of action shots.

It’s ideal for pets and excitable toddlers, letting you go back and look at your pictures after the event and pick out the best ones. It’s easy to access, too. Just slide the Shutter button (the one you use to take photos) to the left when you’re in the Camera app.

You can also head into Settings, then Camera, and toggle Use Volume Up for Burst to allow your volume rocker to trigger Burst mode – just hold it when you’re taking an image.

    6. Scan documents using the camera

Your iPhone’s camera can double as a very respectable document scanner, and while Live Text means you can extract text from images, it’s entirely possible to digitize an entire document. Because it’s buried in the Notes app, though, you may not have spotted how to do it.

    • Open Notes, then tap the camera icon, then Scan Documents.
    • Highlight your document and it should automatically save. You can also manually take a scan with the shutter button.

Once the scan is saved, you can sign it, too, or just share it via any email or messaging app. It’s not got the same level of quality as a bespoke scanner, but it’s not far off, and will certainly do in a pinch.

Not convinced? Be sure to check our list of the best document scanning apps.

    7. Use your camera flash as a notification

    iOS tips and tricks

One final camera trick, which is a little different. As an accessibility feature, you can trigger your iPhone’s camera flash to go off when you receive a notification, providing a more visual way of knowing someone is calling or messaging.

    • Head into Settings, then Accessibility.
    • In the Audio/Visual section there’s an option for 'LED Flash for Alerts'.

You can also trigger it to only work when your phone is on silent, which is ideal if you’d prefer your phone not to vibrate on a desk.

    8. Master Control Center

    iOS tips and tricks

Introduced as part of iOS 7 all the way back in 2013, Control Center has moved from the bottom of the screen to the top as the years have gone by, and it has a lot more utility than you may be aware of.

While Apple doesn’t offer Force Touch these days, you can long-press on Control Center icons to get additional options.

Through this, you can enable Spatial Audio with compatible earphones, pick a Focus mode, get a better look at what’s playing on your audio app, or even go two layers deep – the quadrant with Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mobile signal can be expanded to allow you to easily select a Wi-Fi access point, for example.

    9. Recognize any song with Shazam in the Control Center

    iOS tips and tricks

Remember Shazam? The music recognition service was purchased by Apple in 2018 and remains a great way to identify whatever song is playing – whether you’re in a store, at a party, or just missed the name on the radio.

While Shazam has an app, you can also add it to your iPhone’s Control Center for easy access.

    • Open Settings, then enter Control Center and tap the Plus button next to Music Recognition to add it.

Now, whenever you hear a great song playing, you can pull down from Control Center and hit the Shazam icon to find out what’s playing. If you’re on Apple Music, it’ll even give you the option to add the track to your library.

  • TalkTalk's super fast fibre broadband deal comes with low costs and £80 voucher

Black Friday is rapidly approaching and, in the build-up, we're starting to see some really impressive broadband deals emerge. Right now, TalkTalk is offering a fantastic price - and freebie - on super fast fibre.

You can currently pick up TalkTalk's Fibre 65 plan for only £22 a month. With this package, you're getting speeds averaging 67Mb while paying one of the cheapest fibre prices on the market.

Those speeds will be more than plenty if you're currently working from home, gaming a lot, or simply have a house full of smart devices and multiple connections at one time. On top of the internet plan itself, you'll also get an £80 voucher with this deal. That can be spent at Amazon, Tesco, M&S or simply as an online-only Mastercard.

TalkTalk's cheap fibre internet deal in full

    TalkTalk Fibre 65 Broadband: 18 months | Avg speeds 67Mb | FREE activation | £22 per month + £80 voucher
Right now, TalkTalk's Fibre 65 broadband plan will only cost you £22 a month. Despite those low costs, you'll get speeds averaging 67Mb which is plenty for larger households with multiple devices connected at once. The £80 voucher is a nice extra touch, really helping this deal to stand out from the rest of the market.

While it isn't the cheapest option for these speeds - that title goes to Vodafone's Superfast 2 plan - it isn't far off, only costing £1 more a month. Vodafone also lacks the free gift voucher that TalkTalk has and it will tie you in for a full 24 months compared to 18 with TalkTalk.

Compared to brands like BT and Sky, TalkTalk is considerably more affordable. BT's closest package will cost you £29.99 a month (but does include a £90 Mastercard) and Sky's closest kicks in at £33 a month.

  • Philips reveals more affordable ‘Designed for Xbox’ 4K monitors – but will PC gamers be tempted?

Philips has revealed a pair of new ‘Designed for Xbox’ 4K monitors, which are smaller – and (relatively) more affordable – models that will join the existing 55-inch offering, namely the Philips Momentum 559M1RYV.

These will be the Philips Momentum 27-inch (279M1RV) and 32-inch (329M1RV) displays, and like the current 55-inch model which came out in August, they will offer a 4K HDR panel with a 120Hz refresh rate (with HDMI 2.1).

The 32-inch model is VESA DisplayHDR 400 certified and has AMD FreeSync Premium tech on board, to minimize stuttering and tearing nastiness, but the 27-inch model doesn’t have that feature (and is also rated differently at VESA DisplayHDR 600).

Philips notes that these displays aren’t just tailored for next-gen console gaming, but also good for PC gaming, with the 27-inch model being a good fit for a desktop and a commonly used size with PC gamers.

The manufacturer highlights that the 279M1RV has a Nano IPS panel with up to 98% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, and that it’s a G-Sync compatible monitor for those with Nvidia GPUs in their gaming rigs.

Other notable inclusions are Philips Ambiglow (color-matching backlighting), DTS Sound, and there are adjustments for height, tilt, and swivel (plus cable management chops too).

The new offerings will go on sale in November in the UK with a recommended price of £899.99 and £719.99 for the 32-inch and 27-inch monitors respectively. That compares to the asking price of £1,199 for the 55-inch model which is already on sale, although bear in mind that panel is also equipped with an impressive built-in soundbar (it is, of course, a much bigger monitor).

Philips Momentum 279M1RV monitor shown at an angle

Analysis: What will this mean on the PC front?

It’s always good to have more options, and these smaller-sized monitors in the Philips Momentum range offer a more approachable price tag – although they’re still far from cheap (but then, this is a quality 4K screen with a 120Hz refresh rate).

They also represent a potential choice for PC gamers with Philips angling them like so, particularly the 27-inch model which is a good size to sit on a desk. The good news is that its IPS panel should make things better on the picture quality front, compared to the previous VA screen with the 55-inch product, which as we saw in our sister site GamesRadar’s review, was disappointing when it came to viewing angles (and notably on the PC, lacked the punch and vibrancy seen on the Xbox). The new Nano IPS panel will offer much better viewing angles, and hopefully a more vivid performance on the color front, too.

As always, we won’t really know the truth of exactly what the new models bring to the table until they start being reviewed, but the developments here sound promising enough.
