Google Pay teams up with banks to offer digital accounts

Image Description

More customers will be able to enjoy digital bank accounts through Google Pay very soon. The search giant has revealed it is expanding plans to offer digital banking services in the US after partnering with a total of eight banks as part of a project known internally at Google as Project Cache.

The co-branded, FDIC-insured digital account will be built on top of the bank's existing infrastructure, with Google providing the front-end user experience and financial insights.

The new partners are Bank Mobile, BBVA USA, BMO Harris, Coastal Community Bank, First Independence Bank and SEFCU, which join existing Google partners Citi and SFCU.

The collaboration is part of BBVA's wider five-year plan to expand into digital markets in the US.

"Google is excited to work with BBVA USA in enabling a digital experience that is equitable for all and meets the evolving needs of a new generation of customers," said Felix Lin, vice president of Payments Ecosystems at Google. "We believe that we can use our technology expertise to benefit users, banks and the entire financial ecosystem."

The company has been investing in digital banking innovations for some time, specifically with its open banking initiative, BBVA Open Platform, which enables the bank and its partners to acquire customers using embedded financial products. The developer platform provides a suite of banking and payments services in the US, backed by the benefit of a global financial institution.

"BBVA has focused for decades on how it could use digital to advance the financial industry, and in so doing, create more and better opportunities for customers to manage their financial health," said BBVA USA President and CEO Javier Rodríguez Soler.

"Collaborations with companies like Google represent the future of banking. Consumers end up the true winners when finance and big tech work together for their benefit.”

  • Twitter takes a stab at shopping feature again - Will it click now?

Twitter's previous efforts at making the platform friendly for business and shopping did not meet with any great success. The microblogging site, which felicitously lends itself to creating opinions and spreading news, hasn't cracked the online shopping conundrum yet. However, given that social platforms are relying on shopping as a means to monetization, Twitter has little choice.

Given this situation, Twitter is taking another crack at a new shopping feature on its platform this weekend. In conjunction with Walmart, the microblogging app will be testing a live shopping feature that will allow users to buy products promoted during a real-time video broadcast.

The event, scheduled for November 26, is part of Twitter's efforts to grow revenues  through e-commerce. It is ideally timed to coincide with the peak shopping season in the US and other countries.

This is how Live Shopping stream works

"We are conducting our first test of Live Shopping in collaboration with Walmart, where they will be kicking off Cyber Week with singer, songwriter, dancer and social media superstar Jason Derulo for the first-ever shoppable livestream on Twitter," Twitter announced

"Starting at 7pm ET on Sunday, November 28, people can watch and shop from @Walmart (on iOS and desktop), where Jason will host a 30-minute variety show highlighting electronics, home goods, apparel, seasonal décor, surprise special guests and much more," it said.

Twitter’s live-stream shopping will enable users to tune into the live broadcast, with shopping options displayed below the video feed. That is they can watch the video and also simultaneously shop.

Users can browse a product catalog while watching the live video, and when they click to make a purchase they will be sent to Walmart’s website to complete the transaction.

    Twitter and its shopping saga

Twitter has been trying a few in-stream shopping options over the past year. Twitter, which began testing the Shop Module with select brands, will also be launching it to more merchants in the United States in the coming weeks. The Shop Module also builds on its efforts around Professional Profiles, which it started introducing earlier this year.

Twitter further said that it would start testing a new way to house merchant onboarding and product catalog management tools via the Twitter Shopping Manager. This will give merchants a one-stop-shop for managing how they show up on Twitter.

If these new attempts at making shopping work on Twitter doesn't pay the required dividends, then the platform will find itself in a spot.

  • Microsoft Edge’s half-baked password manager might now be worth a look

Microsoft is preparing to roll out a new version of the in-built password manager for its Edge web browser.

Currently under development, the new-look password management feature will allow users to add credentials to their roster manually for the first time.

At the moment, Microsoft Edge requires users to visit a website, log in and wait for a prompt from the browser. By introducing a manual option, Microsoft will minimize the friction associated with adding passwords en masse.

The ability to add account credentials manually first featured in an early-access build of Google Chrome, which is based on the same Chromium engine as Edge. Microsoft appears to have built upon this foundation to port the functionality over to its own service.

It’s unclear precisely when the feature will make its way into a full public build, but it is currently available to members of the Edge Canary channel under the Profile menu.

    Microsoft Edge password manager

Microsoft first introduced password management functionality to its flagship browser in January last year, offering users a simple alternative to fully-featured services like LastPass and Dashlane, which cost in the region of $40/year.

The idea was to give users a cost-effective way to limit the risk of credential stuffing, brute force attacks and identity theft.

However, recent reports suggest it may still be ill-advised to store your account credentials in your web browser, as opposed to using a dedicated service.

According to security company AhnLab, info-stealing Redline malware is capable of both evading antivirus software and stealing passwords and other sensitive data from its victim’s browser.

In a recent incident, an infection resulted in the compromise of a corporate network, after VPN credentials were stolen from a remote employee’s web browser.

From a cybersecurity perspective, although storing unique passwords in Microsoft Edge is better than deploying an identical password across multiple accounts, it shouldn’t be considered the perfect solution.

  • This Dell XPS 13 for $685 is the best pre-Black Friday laptop deal we've seen so far

We've just spotted what will easily be one of the best pre-Black Friday laptop deals this side of November - this 11th gen Core i5 Dell XPS 13 Touch for just $685.99 (was $1,049.99).

To get this price, simply use the coupon code 50OFF699 at checkout. That'll slash the price right down to a new record low for this model, which also features 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD.

Considering the premium looks, spec, and price of this Dell XPS 13, we'd say it's going to be very hard to beat this one when it comes to sheer bang for the buck, especially if you're looking for one of the best laptops money can buy.

It's a little more expensive than last year's Black Friday laptop deal on a Dell XPS 13 - which featured a 10th gen Core i3 processor for $649 - but this model is far, far more powerful. Having an 11th gen Intel Core i5 CPU is going to help you plow through a much wider range of tasks with greater speed - even the most intensive of work applications.

It's important to note that this is the baseline '(9305)' model, which essentially means it's featuring a slightly thicker bottom screen bezel than the latest Dell XPS 13 (9310) model. It does, however, still feature an absolutely fantastic 400 Nits display, quality build materials, and it's much, much cheaper ($300+ in this case).
